1 BR Tamarack Cottage is a cheerful mini-version of great-grandma's 1940s farmhouse. A pleasant mix of modern comforts and old-fashioned whimsy. Darling electric fireplace to warm your heart on chilly nights. Vintage double bed (memory foam mattress, cotton sheets/quilts) and a comfy sofa. Fridge, small stove, microwave, espresso/coffee machines, lots of appliances. Not lots of counter space. None, in fact, but there's a classic chrome and Formica table. Wifi, BluRay DVD, smart HD TV with local stations and Netflix. AC, yes; DW or W/D, no. Shower, no tub. Bathroom is ensuite. Lots of chick lit to read. Note: Tamarack and Pine Cone Cottages share a wall. Nuther note: All the beds in the cottages are antique or vintage double (full) beds, shorter than many modern beds. Small-pet friendly.
1BR Pine Cone Cottage is a comfy Wild West mini-mancave with modern amenities. The perfect base camp for intrepid travelers and avid fisherfolk. Lots of gorgeous limited edition prints by top wildlife artists, and a couple of paint-by-number originals. Little electric fireplace in lieu of a campfire. Antique brass double bed (memory foam mattress, cotton sheets/quilts) and a comfy leather sofa. Fridge, stove, microwave, espresso/coffee machines, other appliances. Next to no counter space and closet space. Wifi, BluRay DVD, and smart HD TV with local channels and Netflix. Lots of westerns if you want a good read. Bathroom is ensuite. Shower, no tub. AC in summer. No DW or W/D. Note: Pine Cone and Tamarack Cottages share a wall.
2BR Cottonwood Cottage is a step back in time to simple comforts. A nostalgic mix of retro farmhouse and country cabin with modern essentials. Lots of fine and not-so-fine art. Two old-fashioned double beds (memory foam mattresses, cotton sheets and quilts) and a sofa. Fridge, stove, microwave, espresso/coffee machines, and other appliances. Wifi, BluRay DVD, smart HD TV with Netflix. Bathroom with shower, tub, and chandelier. AC in summer. DW, W/D, and computer station. Nice collection of regional history books (settlers and indigenous peoples) and choice fiction. Cottonwood is the biggest cottage (used to be a duplex, like Tamarack/Pine Cone). Small-pet friendly.
1 BR Nootka Rose Cottage is the ultimate she-shed. An English country charmer, with modern luxuries to make your stay even more relaxing -- the best ever girls' getaway. Antique double bed (memory foam mattress, cotton sheets and quilts). Lavish sofa and fainting couch for lounging in style. Too many chandeliers? No. Fridge, vintage stove, microwave, espresso/coffee machines, many appliances. Wifi, BluRay DVD, and smart HD TV with local stations and Netflix. Sleek new ensuite bathroom with shower and tub. AC in summer. DW and small W/D. Lots of teacups, china, crystal for afternoon teas and genteel happy hours. Binge through the library of cozy mysteries and vintage magazines.
2 BR Saskatoon Cottage is tucked away at the back of the lot, just steps from Salmon Creek. Decor leans toward mid-century modern (living room/diner) and shabby chic (bedrooms). Two antique double beds (memory foam mattress, cotton sheets/quilts) and a comfy leather mod sleeper sofa. Fridge, stove, microwave, espresso/coffee machines, and other appliances in the miniscule galley kitchen. Vintage EasyBake Ovens. Tub, no. Shower, yes (very close to toilet). Small-pet friendly. Small covered porch (a shady treat on hot days). Note: Bedrooms are narrow, beds are next to the walls.

Okanogan County is big, really big, about the size of Connecticut. The "City" of Okanogan is small, really small. Even though it's the County seat, there is only one flashing red light at the main intersection. It's a 6-block walk from Kokanee Cottages to that light. Less than that to great food and a good grocery store. The town is pretty quiet, off the main highway (U.S. 97). So it's a nice town to spend one night or many, and the perfect place to start short daytrips in any direction. Theme towns, beaches, wineries, grand scenery, even a foreign country, are within a 2-hour drive each way -- many much closer -- easy afternoon round trips that leave you time to check out local delights, like the best fries in the country, and pristine Omak Lake with its Balance Rock (above).
Whether you're starting out west of the Cascades or from points east, there's more than one path leading to Kokanee Cottages. To maximize your trip, come by one route and go home by another -- more to see if you can make a loop. If you're unfamiliar with north central Washington state, I can make some excellent recommendations for places to see and things to do on your trek out here and back. Like the incredibly cool rock pools at Eagle Falls (above) a bit east of Goldbar, right on U.S. 2 but hidden from view until you walk down the embankment. Or the Gingko Petrified Forest off I-90 west of Vantage (although you'll see better examples in the parking lot of the Gingko Gem Shop). Or the clifftop off-highway overlook at Washington Pass on U.S. 20.
